Iâd put up a temporary, smaller duplicate board in my room at Jasmineâs. There were three men Iâd focused on during my research only because their photos were the clearest. The first one I wanted to confront owned a large supermarket chain.
Rich.
Fat.
And old.
Iâd already checked him out. His wife supported multiple charitable organisations. Some of his money did good. Itâs where the rest of his money went that questioned his integrity.
The first time I saw him I didnât think it was him, because he hadnât aged well. Thick flappy jowls hung from his chin and under his eyes baggy skin hung low, but the tattoo on his forearm confirmed his identify, because the dates marked on his skin matched the photo.
TF5 brushed past me and waddled into the restaurant.
I spread the contents of his wallet on the bench in the ladiesâ toilet. His driverâs licence I kept. He looked younger and thinner in the photo. The man photographed, respectable and businesslike, nothing compared to how he looked now. Clearly the photo had been taken ages ago.
I took out the money from the wallet and counted the notesâfour seventy-five. I stuffed seventy-five dollars back in the wallet and kept four hundred for the organisation I occasionally worked for. The next part would be the fun part.
He sat at the back of the restaurant in a cubicle where the shadows ate his body below the waist. I shuffled into the cubicle on the opposite side and slid his wallet towards him.
âI think you dropped something, mister.â
He patted his pocket under the table and after discovering it wasnât there, he reached over to pick up his wallet. âThanks, darling, thatâs kind of you to give it back.â I snapped my hand down on the wallet and waited for him to withdraw his hand,
I interlaced my hands together on the table, making sure my hands were cupped around the wallet, and tapped my thumbs together. âI took four hundred out.â
He glanced behind him to see if anyone was looking in our direction Maybe he hoped to get the attention of the waiter. Or maybe he just wanted to be left alone.
âIâm going to donate the money to an organisation that hunts men who prey on underage girls.â
He didnât speak.
His eyes squinted closer together.
I slid a photo of myself across the table and kept my finger on the photo. âI believe thatâs you standing over me ready to do all sorts of dirty, naughty things, adults shouldnât do to kids.â
âIâve never seen you, missy.â
âHow would you know? You havenât looked. Iâm not leaving until you look, and we agree on a few things.â
He reached for his glasses case and placed his spectacles in front of the photo and leant forward. He took a good thirty seconds before he sat back. âYou have the wrong person.â
âNope, thatâs definitely you.â I pulled out a magnifying glass from my back pocket and placed it over the photo. âYou can see the tattoo on your forearm. The same one you have there.
